Brahms’s fourth symphony was recognized as a masterpiece already during his own lifetime. Brahms must have been inspired by the passacaglias and chaconnes he found in the music of Buxtehude and Bach. It is therefore quite obvious to arrange this part for organ with the title ‘Passacaglia’. It is transposed to c minor, Bach’s original key, to fit to the organ’s compass.
